Why you chose this business : It is kind of a long story, but when I gave birth to my son, and was on maternity leave from my day job, he developed a horrible case of colic. I live in a one bedroom apartment and it was the middle of winter and I basically could not put my son down for one second because he would scream and cry and I couldnt bear to see him that way. Anyway, after about 3 months of this, my husband suggested we take a road trip down to Florida to escape the cold, and get into a different environment with the baby. So against everyones better judgement (people told us we would not be sane by the time we got down to Florida with a screaming child in the car) but we got in the car and went anyway. Turned out it was the best thing we ever did because our son slept the whole 20 hours. After a while, I started joking around saying that we should take him on a "baby road trip" all of the time when all of the sudden the idea hit me.
Hardest part of business : First, the financial challenges of course. Starting a business is hard and takes a lot of money and committment. It's a lot of hard work too. My schedule is quite hectic. I work my day job, then come home and spend the rest of the day with my son, then start to work on my business at 9 pm until 1 am every night. Its hard on a person to do that every day.
Best part of business: The best part is each day I have a small success to celebrate. One day I might get into a store to sell my product, another day I might win an award, or find out that I am going to get some editorial coverage on my product. And the best day of all is when I hear that a child loves my product. All of these successes are a direct result of something I did because it is only me doing everything!! :)
Are you successful by your standards? Yes I am. I had an idea, I followed through on it and I am fulfilling my dream of having my own company!
Biggest support : My husband for sure. Hands down absolutely. Next I would say my mom and dad. I could not have accomplished what I have accomplished without their support
Anything you would do different? I would be more careful about the people that I hired to do freelance work for me. (i.e. graphic designers and web developers). I ended up having to do things twice because of rush business decisions.
